Authentication + Legalization = Apostille
When you require a Canadian document to be recognized in a foreign country that document must be verified as being legitimate. In Canada, this process of verification is the authentication and legalization of the document: the equivalent of an Apostille certificate. Because Canada did not sign the Hague Apostille Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents (1961), the Canadian government continues to use the full authentication and legalization process.
This 2 step process includes: Authentication of your documents by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT/JLAC) Canada here in Ottawa; and Legalization of your documents by each embassy or consulate of the country for which your specific documents are going to be used.

Please note that certain restrictions and guidelines set down by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) Canada do apply to your documents and must be observed in order for us to process your documents efficiently. Please note that the above fees do not include courier fees that are the responsibility of the client. Your documents will be returned by Canada Post regular mail free of charge. If you would like them returned via courier please include a self-addressed pre-paid courier waybill/envelope and we will undertake to have them returned to you or a third party at no additional handling charge.

Our mission is to make a confusing process easier for our clients so we recommend following our 5-steps that will guide you through what is required before sending your documents to us.
1. Ensure that your document meets the Requirements set down by DFAIT in order for it to be authenticated. If you are still unsure contact us via our Quote Request.
2. Decide what speed of authentication service you require for your document.
3. To legalize your document the embassy charges a fee, please confirm the fee and any other embassy requirements via our Quote Request.
4. Complete the Order Form using the information from the previous points and arrange for Shipping using one of the many companies that delivers to our office daily. Ensure that your document and our order form as well as any embassy requirements are enclosed.
5. Confirm with us that your document has been forwarded so that we can begin the process of keeping you up to date regarding the receipt, progress and completion of your document.
